The Portland Company & the Forneys

The Portland Company was established by John Poor to supply railroad equipment for the Saint Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad, which he had chartered. The company also built equipment for the Maine two foot railroad system. Of particular note was the Forney type locomotives. Though the normal for the Forneys was to run tender first, these were designed to run boiler first. This allowed the hight of the tender to be raised for added water and coal, but meant that the engines seemed to wander from side to side and track to the outside of the curves, not lead into them. My thanks to wikipedia for the information.
